What is the difference between a mattress, a bed base, and a bed?

When someone decides to renew their sleep system, doubts often arise such as: What is a box spring (sommier)? Does the box spring include the mattress? What is the difference between a box spring and a conventional bed?

What is a mattress?

It is the main component of the sleep system. It is where you rest your body and what defines how you will feel when lying down.

What is a box spring (sommier)?

Technically, the box spring is the base upon which the mattress rests. It provides firmness, stability, and extends the lifespan of the mattress.

However, in everyday use, many people use the word “box spring” to refer to the set consisting of the mattress and the base. That is why when someone says “I want to change the box spring,” they are often referring to changing the entire sleep system.

And what is a bed?

The bed, on the other hand, traditionally refers to a piece of furniture (usually made of wood) which is a frame with legs and a headboard, where the mattress is placed.
