Do you notice that you find it hard to connect with others or that you are more irritable with your loved ones? Poor sleep may be one of the reasons. Rest doesn't just affect your energy, but also your bonds, and much of that has to do with oxytocin, the so-called "love hormone."
What is oxytocin?
Oxytocin is a hormone and neurotransmitter that is released in situations involving emotional closeness, physical contact, trust, and affection. It promotes empathy, connection with others, and social well-being.
It also plays a key role in reducing stress, lowering blood pressure, and improving the quality of emotional bonds, especially with a partner and family.
What does oxytocin have to do with rest?
When you sleep well, your body regulates stress better (lowering cortisol) and increases the natural production of oxytocin. This makes you more inclined to feel empathy, communicate clearly, and relate positively to others.
Conversely, fragmented or poor-quality sleep increases irritability, decreases tolerance toward others, and deteriorates emotional ties. Sleeping well is a way to take care of your emotional health and your relationships.
Sleeping as a couple: how does the mattress influence it?
Many couples sleep poorly due to a mattress that doesn't adapt well to the movements of both people. If one person moves and wakes the other, the quality of rest drops… and so does oxytocin.
At Sommistore® we recommend pocket spring mattresses, which isolate movement and allow you to sleep together without disturbing one another.
Additionally, a spacious mattress (Queen, King, or Extra King) offers the necessary comfort to rest freely without giving up emotional contact.
How to increase your oxytocin through rest?
- Get the necessary hours of sleep (at least 7)
- Avoid interruptions to shared sleep
- Create a cozy and relaxing environment in your bedroom
- Choose a mattress that adapts to your body and your partner's
Sleeping well is also taking care of your relationships
When you rest well, you don't just wake up with more energy. You are also more emotionally available to yourself and others. You feel more connection, more empathy, and more desire to share.
At Sommistore® we believe that rest is not just personal. It is also relational.
Choose a mattress that takes care of your body… and your relationships too.
