The exact dimensions of a king size in Uruguay
In Uruguay, there is no single standard for a king size, which creates confusion. The most common sizes you will find are 180 x 200 cm and 200 x 200 cm, although some manufacturers offer 180 x 190 cm.
To understand the jump: a double mattress measures 140 x 190/200 cm, a queen size 160 x 200 cm, and the king starts at 180 cm wide. That is 20 cm more than the queen and 40 cm more than the double.
That 20 cm difference per person seems small, but it is equivalent to the width of an adult shoulder. In practice, it is the difference between feeling like you have your own space or always negotiating for territory.
Does your bedroom allow for it?
Before falling in love with a king, take this basic measurement: you need at least 60 cm of free space on each side of the mattress to move around comfortably and open drawers or closet doors. This means that a 180 cm king requires a room at least 3 meters wide.
Also, factor in the depth: with a 200 cm mattress plus a nightstand and space to move around at the foot of the bed, you need a room at least 3.5 to 4 meters long.
A simple trick: put down masking tape on the floor with the mattress dimensions. Seeing the physical rectangle in the actual space is much more revealing than blueprints.
The real cost of a king size: it's not just the mattress
The price of the mattress is just the beginning. When you upgrade to a king size, everything that surrounds it also changes in price and availability.
The base or box spring must be the same size, and in Uruguay, king models are less common than standard ones, which can limit supply and drive up the price.
